Three former Bulldogs were selected to participate in the Pro Bowl this year.
In a year that many former Bulldogs have shown up and shone out, there were a shockingly low amount of MSU alumni selected to the Pro Bowl. The three Bulldogs that were awarded the honor of playing in the Pro Bowl include DL Fletcher Cox, CB Darius Slay, and MLB Benardrick McKinney. This will be Cox’s fourth, Slays second, and McKinney’s first year attending the game. There were two Bulldogs selected as Pro Bowl alternates as well. Denico Autry and Chris Jones were both selected as alternatives if any of the players selected originally either make it to the Super Bowl or decline the offer. Here’s a quick recap of the five Pro Bowlers seasons to this point.
- Fletcher Cox, DL, Philadelphia Eagles –
Cox has been a force to be reckoned with week in and week out, and opposing offensive linemen get to experience this up close and personal. Up to this point this season, Cox has collected forty-one tackles, 7.5 sacks, and a pass deflection. Cox is two sacks shy of tying his career high, which was set back in 2015. Cox is making the fourth Pro Bowl of his career, all of them being in the past four seasons.
- Darius Slay, CB, Detroit Lions –
Slay isn’t having the same kind of year that he was having last season, but he continues to be one of the best CB in the entire NFL. Slay has racked up thirty-seven tackles, three interceptions, fifteen pass breakups, and a pick-six so far this season. This will be Slay’s second Pro Bowl, also his second in a row.
- Benardrick McKinney, LB, Houston Texans –
McKinney has played good football all year long, collecting ninety-six tackles, 1.5 sacks, and four pass deflections. McKinney has also forced a fumble this season as well. McKinney is making his first Pro Bowl appearance, hopefully with many more to come.
- Chris Jones, DL, Kansas City Chiefs –
Selected as a Pro Bowl alternate, Jones has been one of the best DL in the NFL this season. At this point in the season, Jones has collected fourteen sacks, thirty-seven tackles, a forced fumble, an interception, five pass deflections, a pick-six, and has a sack in ten straight games. Jones has not made it to the Pro Bowl yet in his career, so hopefully he will have the opportunity to this season.
- Denico Autry, DL, Indianapolis Colts –
Another Pro Bowl alternate, Autry has been playing the best football of his career. Autry has collected nine sacks (a career high), thirty-four tackles, two forced fumbles, and a blocked FG. He has also helped the Colts make a push for the playoffs this season.
